Fira bay

Limenas is located in the bay of Fira. Administratively, it belongs to the Municipal Unit of Thira, Municipality of Thira, Regional Unit of Thira, South Aegean Region.

The Port of Ormos Fira is the port of Fira. Until the construction of the port of Athens, it played an important role in serving the needs of Fira. Today, it is the gateway for cruise ship passengers to Thira. Cruise ships moor at offshore vessels and from there passengers are transferred to the shore by lancets. Besides these, the port serves fishing and other vessels. Therefore, it is of particular importance for the economy and the development of the tourist product of Thira.

The port has a jetty which creates a small harbor area of 1,100m² where fishing boats moor, but in the rest of its part it does not have any protective structure and therefore there is no clearly defined harbor basin. In any case, the total area of the bay does not exceed 26 acres.

The port does not have any protective pier or breakwater, as the great depths of the sea make the construction of any protective work prohibitive. However, it is clarified that despite the unsuitability of Fira bay for anchoring, it is safe in all weathers. It is affected only by strong freckles, which, however, do not adversely affect the movement of the lances.
